June, 2010 The Arrival
Hair standing out in stiff clumps, bodice soaked through in red, she hunted for it everywhere; heaving cots, upending tables, flinging baskets across the room. But she couldn’t find it anywhere. She stood rigid, fingers frozen into claws, the empty cave of her mouth pushing the rest of her features into a rictus of agony, not realizing yet that no sound would ever fill it again.
Fela’s hands clung to the sideboard as the jolting of the wagon pulled out of the dream. The wagon that carried her and the others came to a final halt in the batey of Hacienda Las Mercedes, a sugar plantation on the northern coast of Puerto Rico. She looked down on her bruised hands before looking out at this new place that awaited her.
Here is a new place but it does not matter. I will never find peace in their world. They are all the places of the white ones. I pray that their hatred will send me to the ancestors. But it is not their way. Theirs is a world of maiming. How many times I’ve begged to the gods for my release? My only hope is that in their killing frenzy, they’ll send me to the other side, to the ancestors. But until they do, I’ll go within where they’ll never touch me. They’ve taken my body but they’ll never touch my soul.
Fela took a deep breath and pulled a curtain around what was left of her heart as the wagon pulled into the yard.
